For two entire days Madrid has been the capital city of fine dining. Spain’s David Muñoz has been named best chef in the world for the second year in a row, at Best Chef Awards 2022 this Tuesday, September 20.
The awards took place at the Crystal Gallery of the Palacio de Cibeles, headquarters of the Madrid City Council in Spain’s capital, at a ceremony attended by luminaries of the gastronomic world.
Thanks to his work at DiverXO restaurant, in addition to this first place, this year he picked up two other awards: the best restaurant in Madrid, and the best chef voted by fellow professionals.
David Muñoz has built a reputation as a pioneering and creative adventurer. Still only in his thirties, he continually surprises with his unique approach to cooking, which he describes as ‘brutal’.
Chef David Muñoz gained experience working in Spain, at Balzac and Viridiana, and abroad, where he absorbed the global influences that are now reflected in his own style. Several years spent living in London saw him working in the city’s best restaurants, such as Nobu. On his return to Madrid, David Muñoz decided to open his own restaurant DiverXO. His slogan is “Avant-garde o muerte“.
Among the 100 candidates, Noma’s Rene Redzepi was named as second on the list, while Spain’s Joan Roca came in third place. Indeed Spain was the country that provided the most amount of new chefs to the list, followed by Italy and France.
Italy’s Franco Pepe, from the Pepe In Grani pizzeria, won the Best Pizza award for the second consecutive year, while Mugaritz’s Andoni Luis Aduriz picked up the award for Best Science Chef. The Innovation Award went to Australia’s Josh Niland.
The Best Chef is a project dedicated to celebrating the many talented chefs that create the best food experiences around the world and to promote the food comunity.
In 2015 Cristian Gadau and Joanna Slusarczyk have given life to this itinerant gastronomic event – Best Chef Award – which has been establishing itself, on par with others world ranking (Michelin, 50 best) as one of the most prestigious for fine dining world and considered to be the Nobel Prize for cuisine.
